NEET PG 2025 – According to the Supreme Court, NEET PG 2025 should be conducted in a single sitting for the sake of equity.
The Supreme Court on May 30, 2025, decided that the NBE should conduct the NEET-PG 2025 exam in only one sitting, after scrapping the previous arrangement of conducting it in two shifts. The decision was taken to ensure that the examination process is conducted fairly and transparently for all.
Background: Proposal to change from one shift to two shifts:-
As many candidates participated, NBE recommended two shifts for the NEET-PG 2025 exam, so that logistics could be managed. Still, the plan worried those applying because it could create differences in difficulty between the two shifts, giving some applicants an unfair advantage.
The court’s justification:-
In response to a petition, the Supreme Court said the two-shift system was “arbitrary and unfair.” The Court pointed out that if the examination didn’t have equal difficulty for all shifts, it would not be fair to all the candidates. It was thought that the new format would mean luck could decide outcomes more than merit, which could lessen the fairness of the process.
The Court added that if the exam was given in a single shift, the need for complicated normalization would disappear, as it is often not transparent and can spark disagreements. To assure fairness and meritocracy, the Court has chosen to evaluate all candidates using the same conditions during a single-shift examination.
Impact of the change on NEET-PG in 2025:-
The Supreme Court’s ruling will affect how the NEET-PG 2025 exam, set for June 15, 2025, is conducted. Since the exam will be held at the same time for everyone, the NBE will have to make new arrangements for attendance. Ensuring that the exams are conducted fairly and openly is the top priority, no matter what difficulties the event may encounter.
Candidates now have certainty that everyone taking the examination faces the same questions in the same way. As a result, students should feel more confident about the examination system and be less concerned about possible differences between different exam times.
In a Wider Context: Correcting Mistakes in Medical Admissions:-
It forms a part of the judiciary’s attempts to solve problems with medical admissions. Before, the Supreme Court instructed that raw scores, answer keys, and normalization formulas for NEET-PG be made public for greater transparency. The Court also underlined that people who block seats need to be penalized, as they keep good candidates from studying.
The Court advised that the All India and State counseling processes should be coordinated, so that fewer seats are left unoccupied.
